Idealism
Maybe we should wear our broken hearts and battered idealism not like hard-won honours but open, weeping sores...maybe that unlocks the door that leads to freedom...maybe
If we do not let the places in us that are not whole show, no one can ever touch them. If we keep trying to fill those spots with "stuff" or any kind of substitute, we just re-irritate them. If we constantly protect the wound, we grow inward and start loving our pain instead of thirsting for its healing. I am learning all this in a new way recently -- my life is starting to change...at last.

Agreed.
Perhaps thats the only way we can become truly humbled.
Which reminds me of that wonderful quote from Blaise Pascal:
"Do you wish people to think well of you? Then don't speak well of yourself."
"Noble deeds that are concealed are most esteemed"
